Equipment
- - Balls for each player
- - Cones to mark the 20x20 practice area
Setup
- Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones
- Group: 1 player starts inside the practice area with a ball at their feet
- Equipment: Cones marking the corners of the 20x20 yard area
Instructions
- Player uses the inside of the foot to push the ball forward.
- Player pulls the ball back with the sole of the same foot.
- Immediately push the ball diagonally forward using the inside of the foot.
- Repeat the pull back with the sole.
- Follow a step-by-step progression: stationary, then increasing touch speed, then add combined moves.
Coaching Points
- Maintain close control over the ball
- Keep head up to increase awareness
- Ensure proper technique of using the sole and inside of the foot
- Perform moves with speed
- Keep knees slightly bent and stay light on feet
- Follow the rhythm of the push and drag actions
- Gradually increase fluency and speed
- Ensure each technique or feint is specific and taught clearly
- Encourage minimum head-down time with more proficiency
- Focus on comfort and confidence with each move
- Improve touch through various manipulation techniques
- Enhance balance and coordination
- Develop a feel for the ball with repeated actions
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Add cones for players to navigate around while performing the moves.
2. Increase the speed at which players must perform the moves.
3. Introduce additional, more complex ball manipulation techniques.
4. Challenge players to combine two moves into a fluid sequence.
Make it easier:
1. Allow players more time to execute each move.
2. Use a larger area to reduce the need for quick turns.
3. Reduce the complexity by focusing on just one type of manipulation move, like the sole drag only.
