Equipment
- Cones for marking 40x30 yd area and end zones
- Six small 2 yd goals, three per end line
- Soccer balls
Setup
- Area: 40x30 yard area marked with cones, including 10 yard end zones at each end
- Goals: Three small 2 yd goals spaced along each end line, one set per team to defend
- Team Red: 4 red outfield players start positioned in the playing area, defending the three goals on their own end line
- Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players start positioned in the playing area, defending the three goals on their own end line
- Equipment: Cones marking the 40x30 yard area and the 10 yd end zones, six small 2 yd goals (three per end line), soccer balls
Instructions
- Start the play with one team attacking, seeking to pass through any of the opponent's three goals.
- The opposing team defends, focusing on communication and compactness.
- If the defending team wins the ball, they immediately attack the opposite goals.
- Reset play with the other team restarting if a goal is scored or the ball exits the playing area.
Coaching Points
- Maintain constant communication among players
- Choose good defensive body positioning (low and side-on)
- Quickly close down the nearest attacker
- Demonstrate patience and stay compact in defense
- Cover attacking players and block potential passing lanes
- Double-team the player with the ball when advantageous
- Spread defensively but always remain oriented towards the ball
- Encourage players to coach each other for teamwork and coordination
- Understand positional play in attack and defense
- Focus on developing individual defending skills like jockeying and tackling
- Work cohesively to defend as a unit
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the playing area to increase pressure.
2. Add a fifth attacker for increased challenge.
3. Restrict passes to two-touch play.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the playing area to allow more space.
2. Add a neutral player to assist the defendings team.
3. Allow unlimited touches for improved control.
