Setup
- Area: Open space with two cones marking the server's and receiver's starting positions, set an appropriate throwing distance apart.
- Group: 2 players, one server and one receiver, each starting on their own cone facing each other.
- Equipment: 2 cones marking the server's and receiver's starting spots, plus a supply of balls held by the server.
Instructions
- The server throws the ball towards the receiver with the appropriate height.
- The receiver uses their chest to cushion the ball and then volleys it back to the server.
- Aim to pass the ball back to the server's hands, targeting the waist area.
- Repeat the exercise for a set amount of time, focusing on light footwork and control.
- Optionally, the receiver can check towards the cone before each throw for increased intensity.
- If in pairs, switch roles after a set time.
Coaching Points
- Relax and cushion the ball upon chest contact.
- Maintain clear communication between server and receiver.
- Adjust positioning to move in line with the ball's flight.
- Ensure the server throws at appropriate heights for different body parts like chest and feet.
- Focus on quality footwork.
- Use an appropriate surface for controlling the ball.
- Keep a realistic distance for effective practice.
- Maintain quality in both control and passing.
- Refine technical ability with ball reception.
- Develop familiarity with the ball's movement upon touch.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the distance between server and receiver.
2. Use weaker foot for return volleys.
3. Add a time limit for ball return.
Make it easier:
1. Reduce the distance between server and receiver.
2. Allow the ball to bounce before controlling.
3. Have the receiver catch the ball after their chest touches before attempting the volley.
