Equipment
- Soccer balls
- Cones for marking two 25x15 yard areas and central zone
Setup
- Area: Two 25x15 yard areas marked with cones, separated by a central neutral zone
- Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player starts with a ball inside one of the 25x15 yard areas
- Team Red: 1 red defender starts in the central zone between the two areas
- Equipment: Soccer balls for each blue player; cones marking the two 25x15 yard areas and the central zone
Instructions
- Players dribble within their area, keeping their heads up and maintaining ball control.
- When confident, players attempt to dribble across to the opposite area.
- In the central zone, players perform a fake to evade the defender.
- If the defender intercepts, they try to knock the ball away.
- Unsuccessful players return to their starting zone to try again.
- Encourage attempts to beat the defender with various dribbling techniques.
Coaching Points
- Maintain close ball control at all times
- Use a good first touch to set up dribbles
- Keep your head up to scan for the defender
- Show a positive attitude and willingness to attack
- Execute fakes with proper technique
- Accelerate quickly after a fake
- Create space and exploit 1v1 opportunities
- Continuously make decisions on dribble types
- Mix dribbling variations and decisions
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the playing areas.
2. Add a second defender to the central zone.
3. Allow defenders to actively defend within one step inside the playing areas.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing areas.
2. Allow players to start crossing without faking if initial attempts are unsuccessful.
3. Remove the defender temporarily to build confidence before reintroducing them.
