Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Soccer balls
  • Cones to outline each 10x10 meter area
Setup
  1. Area: 10x10 yard grid marked with cones for each group of three players
  2. Group: 3 players per grid - 2 servers each with a ball standing together at one corner of the grid, and 1 working player without a ball starting at the diagonally opposite corner
  3. Equipment: 2 soccer balls per grid held by the servers, cones marking the corners of each 10x10 yard grid
Instructions
  1. The first server throws the ball for the working player to control and return using specified parts of the body.
  2. After passing back, the working player runs diagonally to the opposite corner.
  3. The second server repeats the process.
  4. Rotate roles frequently between players.
Coaching Points
  • Focus on cushioning the ball on contact.
  • Decide early on the controlling surface to use.
  • Keep head up to improve spatial awareness.
  • Align movement with the trajectory of the ball.
  • Stay light on your feet for agility.
  • Deliver high-quality, accurately weighted passes.
  • Communicate clearly with teammates.
  • Regularly rotate the surface area, targeting feet, thighs, or chest as appropriate.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the speed of the drill by reducing downtime.
2. Make the grid larger to require more movement.
Make it easier:
1. Use a smaller grid to reduce movement distance.
2. Allow one bounce before controlling the ball.
3. Focus on using feet only for control to increase familiarity.
