Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones for pitch and zone marking
  • 1 goal
  • Bibs to differentiate teams
  • Multiple soccer balls for continuous play
Setup
  1. Area: 30x35 yard area marked with cones
  2. Goals: One goal at one end of the area
  3. Team Red: 3 red outfield players lined up across the halfway line ready to press
  4. Team Blue: 3 blue outfield players start with 1 centre back positioned 5 yards in front of the goalkeeper and 2 wingers/full-backs spaced wide near the halfway line for support
  5. Team Blue GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line
  6. Equipment: Cones marking the perimeter of the 30x35 yard area and the goal, bibs distinguishing red and blue teams, multiple soccer balls placed with the goalkeeper for continuous restarts
Instructions
  1. Goalkeeper starts play with a short pass to the center back, facing pressure.
  2. Within 3 seconds, the pressing team launches a high press.
  3. Defenders work to maintain possession as the pressers close lanes.
  4. Pressing team aims to quickly regain possession or transition defenders.
Coaching Points
  • React swiftly to passing triggers.
  • Coordinate to effectively block passing lanes.
  • Apply precise pressing angles.
  • Maintain continuous communication among players.
  • Balance pressure with sufficient coverage.
  • Keep a compact defensive formation.
  • Support the player applying pressure.
  • Prevent passes back to the goalkeeper.
  • Observe opponents' body cues.
  • Anticipate potential passes from defenders.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Limit possession recovery to 2 seconds.
2. Restrict defenders to one-touch play only.
3. Add more defenders for increased passing options.
Make it easier:
1. Allow 4-5 seconds for pressing response.
2. Reduce number of defenders to limit their options.
3. Permit defenders additional touches before pressure.
