- Balls
- Cones or Markers to define the area
Setup
- Area: 30x30 yard area marked with cones, adjustable based on player count
- Group: 1 red player (Player 1) starts inside the area holding the ball, remaining players spaced evenly throughout the area in numbered sequence
- Equipment: Balls distributed around the perimeter of the area, cones marking the corners of the area
Instructions
- Player 1 initiates play by passing to Player 2, who must find space to receive silently.
- Players continue to pass in numerical order in silence, focusing on alternative communication methods like eye contact and gestures.
- Once the sequence completes with the ball back at Player 1, encourage players to incorporate verbal communication, using calls like 'hold' or 'time'.
- Ensure players constantly move and create dynamic passing options.
Coaching Points
- Establish good angles and distances for support
- Maintain quality and accuracy in passing
- Use head up to scan for options
- Ensure first touch sets up next action
- Stay light and ready to move quickly
- Emphasize timing and disguise in passes
- Form triangles and diamonds to facilitate movement
- Recognize space as a team and individually
- Let play illustrate teaching moments
- Develop spatial awareness to understand passing lanes
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce area size to increase difficulty of passing and movement.
2. Limit the number of touches per player.
3. Introduce opposition to apply pressure and encourage quicker decision-making.
Make it easier:
1. Increase area size to allow more space to maneuver.
2. Allow limited verbal communication throughout the drill.
3. Remove numerical passing order to reduce complexity.
