Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • 4 Goals
  • Cones for marking the area
  • Multiple soccer balls
  • Goal posts or markers
Setup
  1. Area: 30x20 yard area marked with cones
  2. Goals: Two small goals at each end of the area (four goals total)
  3. Team Red: 2 red outfield players start with a ball, positioned at one end near their goal, ready to attack the opposite goal
  4. Team Blue: 2 blue outfield players start at the opposite end near their own goal, ready to attack as soon as the red pair's shot is taken
  5. Equipment: Cones marking the 30x20 area, a goal post or marker at each of the four goals, multiple soccer balls distributed among the waiting pairs
Instructions
  1. The starting pair (red) dribbles to the opposite goal.
  2. One player takes a shot and then touches a goal post.
  3. After touching the post, the player must recover to defend.
  4. The next pair begins attacking as soon as the shot is taken.
  5. Defenders aim to win the ball and counter-attack toward the opposite goal.
Coaching Points
  • Close down the ball quickly
  • Communicate effectively
  • Maintain high concentration levels
  • Stay light and agile on the feet
  • Make play predictable and manageable
  • Have the nearest player pressure the ball
  • Maintain a compact defensive shape
  • Attempt to win the ball when possible
  • Achieve and maintain central and wide compactness
  • Cover attacking players consistently
  • Press the ball carrier swiftly
  • Understand defensive shapes for pressure, cover, and support
  • Identify and block passing lanes effectively
  • Transition quickly to a counter-attack
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the size of the playing area.
2. Allow attackers an additional player.
3. Limit defenders to only intercepting passes to win possession.
Make it easier:
1. Reduce the size of the playing area.
2. Allow defenders to start closer to the ball.
3. Permit an additional defender to support recovery.
