Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Balls
  • 3 small gates or cones
  • Full-sized goal
  • Markers for targets in goal
  • Cones to define pitch and halfway line
Setup
  1. Area: Half a pitch (approx. 50x40 yards) marked with cones
  2. Goals: One full-sized goal at one end of the area
  3. Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players spaced evenly across the playing area, starting in possession and attacking toward the goal
  4. Team Red: 4 red outfield players spaced evenly between the gates and the goal, starting in a defensive shape to intercept
  5. Equipment: 3 small gates (cones) positioned along the edge of the penalty area, cones marking the boundary of the playing area and the halfway line, target markers placed inside the goal (or on the halfway line if used)
Instructions
  1. The attacking team attempts to pass the ball through one of the gates for a teammate to run onto and shoot at goal.
  2. If successful, they can score in the full-sized goal.
  3. The defending team's aim is to maintain shape and intercept, counter-attacking to the halfway line if they win possession.
Coaching Points
  • Maintain clear communication and focus.
  • Adopt a low, side-on body shape.
  • Close down the ball quickly with the nearest player.
  • Stay compact and patient, intercept when possible.
  • Assign individual press roles, timing and method.
  • Cover and block possible passes promptly.
  • Double-team the attacker when practical.
  • Ensure defenders maintain balance and coordination.
  • Guide attackers predictably with body positioning.
  • Adjust defensive strategy to prevent through passes.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the gates to increase passing difficulty.
2. Limit the number of touches for attackers.
3. Allow attackers to begin from different starting positions.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the gates to simplify passes.
2. Add an extra defender to create a numerical advantage.
3. Allow multiple attempts to pass through the gate before defenders can counter-attack.
