Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
- Balls (one for each baby turtle)
- Cones/markers (for setting up the 20x20 yard area and the 5-yard square)
Setup
- Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones/markers, plus a 5-yard square marked outside one side of the area.
- Team Red: 1 red outfield player (grown-up turtle) starts without a ball, positioned just outside the main area ready to enter and tag a baby turtle's ball.
- Team Blue: 2 blue outfield players (baby turtles) start, each with a ball, spaced evenly inside the 20x20 yard area.
- Equipment: 2 balls (one per baby turtle), cones/markers marking the boundary of the 20x20 yard area and the 5-yard square outside one side of it.
Instructions
- Baby turtles dribble their balls around the area, avoiding grown-up turtles.
- Grown-up turtles attempt to touch a baby turtle's ball with their foot.
- If touched, the baby turtle dribbles to the 5-yard square to perform a coach-assigned skill such as toe taps or juggling three times.
- Once completed, the baby turtle returns to the large area to resume play.
- Rotate roles regularly so each player experiences being both a baby and grown-up turtle.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players consistently.
- Improve spatial awareness within the playing area.
- Focus on close ball control.
- Ensure the session is enjoyable for all players.
- Adapt the session for age appropriateness.
- Facilitate engagement of all players.
- Let the game be the teacher rather than over-coaching.
- Use different parts of the foot for ball control.
- Train players to move the ball at variable speeds.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the playing area to increase difficulty.
2. Add more grown-up turtles to increase pressure.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area to make it easier to evade.
2. Allow baby turtles to pause and shield the ball as needed.
