  • Cones
  • Two Goals
  • Footballs
Setup
  1. Area: 50x40 yard area divided into three equal thirds using cones, with the middle third serving as the 4v4 playing zone.
  2. Goals: One goal centred on each end line of the area.
  3. Team Red: 4 red outfield players start in the middle third for the 4v4, plus 1 additional red defender positioned in the final third nearest the blue goal, only entering to defend against blue's attacker.
  4. Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the red team's goal.
  5. Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players start in the middle third for the 4v4, plus 1 additional blue defender positioned in the final third nearest the red goal, only entering to defend against red's attacker.
  6. Team Blue GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the blue team's goal.
  7. Equipment: Cones marking the four corners of the 50x40 area and the two lines dividing it into thirds.
Instructions
  1. Players begin a 4v4 match in the middle third.
  2. Look for opportunities to play through balls into the final third.
  3. An attacking player runs into the final third upon a successful through ball.
  4. The attacker attempts to beat the defender 1v1 and take a shot on goal.
  5. Only the designated defender can enter the final third.
  6. The offside rule is in effect; attackers must start their run from the middle third.
Coaching Points
  • Encourage effective communication.
  • Focus on a good first touch.
  • Emphasize pass quality: accuracy and disguise.
  • Receive on the back foot when possible.
  • Choose the right pass technique for the situation.
  • Create space with movement to receive the ball.
  • Maintain teamwork and clear communication.
  • Assess passing options by considering angles and support distances.
  • Decide when to play a through ball or maintain possession.
  • Pass with proper technique based on pathway clarity.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the space in the middle third.
2. Add a second defender in the final third.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the final third.
2. Reduce the number of defenders in the final third to zero.
3. Allow attackers to start their run early from the middle third.
