Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Soccer balls
  • Cones for marking the area
  • Standard-sized goal
Setup
  1. Area: 44x18 yard penalty box marked with cones
  2. Goals: One standard-sized goal centred on the goal line
  3. Group GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line in the centre of the goal
  4. Neutral: 2 black neutral players scattered within the 6-yard box as interference
  5. Coach: 1 grey server positioned at the corner flag with balls, delivering swinging corners into the area
  6. Equipment: Soccer balls placed at both corners of the practice area; cones marking the penalty box boundary
Instructions
  1. The server delivers swinging corner kicks into the area.
  2. The goalkeeper navigates through interference to claim the crossed ball.
  3. Emphasize ball collection at the highest point with clear communication.
  4. Rotate the direction of corners to include variability.
  5. Coach and provide feedback on technique and decision-making throughout.
Coaching Points
  • Maintain a balanced set position with body weight forward
  • Reach for high balls at the highest point
  • Communicate clearly with defense to maintain organization
  • Keep a positive attitude and instill confidence in defenders
  • Make early decisions regarding the ball's trajectory
  • Maintain awareness of goalpost location
  • Ensure knees are slightly bent for mobility
  • Shoulder check to cover all angles
  • Be alert when a set piece is conceded
  • Use effective lateral and forward-backward footwork
  • Command the ball with authority as you approach
  • Execute a clean ball punch away from goal when necessary
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the number of interference players in the 6-yard box.
2. Serve balls with different trajectories and heights.
3. Reduce the space available for the goalkeeper to move.
Make it easier:
1. Decrease the number of interference players in the 6-yard box.
2. Serve predictable, lofted balls into the area.
3. Allow the goalkeeper more space to maneuver by widening the practice area.
