Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Soccer balls
  • Cones or markers
Setup
  1. Area: 30x30 yard area divided into four equal 15x15 yard grids.
  2. Group: 16 outfield players split into four groups of 4, one group positioned inside each grid and numbered 1 to 4 within their group.
  3. Equipment: cones marking the outer corners of the 30x30 area and the four internal grid divisions, plus one soccer ball per grid for each group to pass and move with.
Instructions
  1. Players pass and move within their grid.
  2. Coach calls out a number (1 to 4), and the player with that number moves to the next grid clockwise as the defender.
  3. The new grid becomes a 3v1, with the defender trying to win the ball.
  4. Remaining players must keep possession using quick and accurate passes.
  5. Time how long each group maintains possession.
  6. After a predetermined period, call a new number to rotate the defender role.
  7. If the same number is called sequentially, that player rotates again to the next grid to defend.
Coaching Points
  • Communicate effectively to maintain possession.
  • Position at good angles and distances for support.
  • Make early decisions both with and without the ball.
  • Keep your head up to scan the field.
  • Use quality passes—accurate, well-timed, and sometimes disguised.
  • Focus on body shape for receiving passes.
  • Play fast, confident, and grounded passes.
  • Maintain first-touch control.
  • Choose the correct passing option effectively.
  • Adjust grid size to match skill level.
  • Defenders should provide realistic pressure.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce grid size for more pressure.
2. Limit the number of touches for players in possession.
Make it easier:
1. Increase grid size to allow more space.
2. Allow an unrestricted number of touches for players in possession.
3. Use additional players to increase team numbers for more support and maintain easier possession.
