Equipment
- 16 Cones
- 4 Balls
- Stopwatch (for time management)
Setup
- Area: 10x10 yard area marked with cones, divided into four equal 5x5 yard squares
- Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players, one positioned inside each of the four squares as possession players
- Team Red: 4 red outfield players positioned outside the grid as defenders, ready to enter and challenge each square in sequence
- Coach: 1 grey coach positioned just outside the grid holding spare balls
- Equipment: 16 cones marking the outer 10x10 boundary and the four internal 5x5 squares, 4 balls placed one in each square
Instructions
- On the coach's command, start the drill.
- Possession players attempt to keep control of the ball within their square.
- Defenders try to win the ball, moving from square to square sequentially.
- Allow possession players to dribble, pass quickly, and create space.
- Rotate player roles after defenders have challenged each square.
- Continue the drill as determined by the coach, focusing on intensity and control.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick ball movement and confident dribbling.
- Emphasize accurate passing and creating space.
- Adjust coaching demands based on player fitness and skill level.
- Ensure exercises take players out of their aerobic comfort zone.
- Progress intensity or duration to maintain performance.
- Build overall muscle efficiency for prolonged play.
- Balance workload with adequate recovery periods.
- Provide flexibility in planning to prevent burnout.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of each square to increase pressure.
2. Add a fifth defender to increase ball-winning challenges.
3. Decrease rest time between rotations to boost endurance.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of each square to provide more space for possession.
2. Allow possession players to use two-touch maximum to maintain control.
3. Provide extended rest periods between rotations to enhance recovery.
