Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Soccer balls
  • Cones
  • Field markers
  • Goals
  • Bibs
Setup
  1. Area: 40x30 yard rectangular area marked with cones, divided into a central zone and two flagged wing zones on each side
  2. Goals: One goal at the attacking end line for the box run-ins
  3. Team Blue: 6 blue outfield players start with 4 centrally in the middle zone for linking play and 2 positioned at the edges between the central zone and each wing zone
  4. Team Red: 2 red outfield players start in designated defensive zones within the central grid
  5. Equipment: Cones and field markers outlining the rectangular area and the flagged wing zones on each side, with bibs distinguishing attackers, link players, and defenders
Instructions
  1. Attackers use link players to transfer the ball to wing zones.
  2. Defenders remain in their zones until the ball enters the wing area.
  3. Once switched, defending partner challenges winger.
  4. Wingers progress down the flank, crossing to the opposite winger advancing into the box.
Coaching Points
  • Ensure rapid, accurate ball movement using link players.
  • Emphasize clear communication to maintain team structure.
  • Defenders challenge wingers only upon ball control.
  • Timing of runs is essential for receiving passes effectively.
  • Wingers must execute accurate crosses even under pressure.
  • Maintaining possession is key for effective side switching.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Introduce an additional defender to apply more pressure.
2. Decrease wing zone width to test wingers' skills.
Make it easier:
1. Allow initial freedom of movement for defenders.
2. Expand wing zone for simpler navigation.
