Equipment
- Markers to define the practice area
- Balls for each player
Setup
- Area: 20x20 yard area marked with markers
- Group: 1 black player (minimum, scalable to more) spaced evenly within the area, each with a ball, standing with the outside of the right foot lightly touching the top of the ball
- Equipment: Markers defining the 20x20 yard practice area, 1 ball per player
Instructions
- Begin by rolling the ball from right to left using the sole of the foot.
- Keep the foot in contact with the ball throughout the motion, using the full sole to control it.
- Reverse the direction by rolling the ball back from left to right.
- Encourage players to perform the move fluidly, maintaining balance.
- Gradually increase the speed as players become comfortable.
- Introduce additional ball manipulation techniques once basic proficiency is achieved.
Coaching Points
- Maintain close control of the ball
- Keep the head up with an occasional glance down
- Focus on technique, ensuring the foot rotates correctly
- Increase speed once comfortable
- Keep knees slightly bent and be light on your feet
- Develop rhythm in the movement
- Gradually improve fluency and speed of the move
- Master different ball manipulation techniques
- Aim for coordination and balance
- Build comfort with the ball and movement
- Encourage proactive adaptation to increase challenge
- Provide feedback and encouragement to maintain engagement
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the speed of the drill.
2. Combine additional techniques and change them on command.
3. Add directional changes during the move.
Make it easier:
1. Slow down the moves.
2. Allow players to stabilize the ball after each roll.
3. Use a slightly larger area to reduce congestion.
