Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
- Balls
- Cones (to mark 10x15 metre areas)
Setup
- Area: 11x16 yard area marked with cones
- Team Red: 1 red outfield player starts as defender, positioned goal side of the attacker with a 2-yard gap
- Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player starts as attacker on one end line of the area with the ball
- Equipment: Cones marking the corners of the 11x16 yard area, 1 ball starting with the attacker
Instructions
- The attacker dribbles towards the opposite side, weaving left and right.
- The defender moves backward in a side-on jockeying stance, maintaining a 2-metre distance.
- Ensure the defender stays goal side of the attacker without tackling.
- When the far line is reached, players switch roles and repeat.
Coaching Points
- Maintain a side-on, low, balanced jockeying posture.
- Keep a 2-metre distance from the attacker.
- Focus on backward movement, avoiding lunging for the ball.
- Position yourself between the attacker and the goal.
- Use short, controlled steps to adjust to the attacker's movement.
- Watch the attacker's hips to predict their direction.
- Prioritize containment and apply pressure without tackling.
- Increase speed as technique improves at slower paces.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the distance between attacker and defender to 1 metre.
2. Have the attacker change speed and direction more frequently.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the play area to 15x20 metres.
2. Allow the defender to initiate slight contact to build confidence.
3. Have attackers dribble in a straight line first before introducing direction changes.
