Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Soccer balls
  • Cones (for marking area)
  • Four small gates
Setup
  1. Area: 15x15 yard area marked with cones
  2. Team Red: 1 red defender starts marking the attacker tightly at one side of the area
  3. Team Blue: 1 blue attacker starts at one side of the area facing the defender
  4. Coach: 1 grey server positioned at one side of the area with the ball, ready to pass to the attacker
  5. Equipment: 4 small gates positioned one on each side of the 15x15 area, soccer balls at the server's position
Instructions
  1. The server passes the ball to the attacker, who is closely marked by a defender.
  2. Both the attacker and defender can move before the attacker receives the ball.
  3. The attacker tries to turn and dribble through a gate behind the defender to score.
  4. If the defender intercepts, they counter by dribbling through the gate at the opposite end.
  5. Rotate roles among server, attacker, and defender after each play or set time.
Coaching Points
  • Quickly close down the attacker.
  • Maintain communication with teammates.
  • Stay concentrated throughout.
  • Position body low and side-on to the attacker.
  • Stay light on the feet for quick adjustments.
  • Make play predictable by guiding the attacker.
  • Display patience and anticipation.
  • Attempt to win the ball when opportunities arise.
  • Focus on intelligent 1v1 defense.
  • Use balance and controlled pressing.
  • Assess the optimal distance from the attacker when pressing.
  • Position properly for individual and collective defense.
  • Provide covering support for teammates.
  • Observe and read the attacker's intentions and body language.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the area to increase defensive pressure.
2. Allow attackers to start from different angles to increase unpredictability.
3. Limit defender's use of hands to simulate game conditions.
Make it easier:
1. Increase area size for more space.
2. Allow the attacker more time on the ball before the defender engages.
3. Use larger gates for attackers to score.
