Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • - Full-size goal
  • - Soccer balls
  • - Cones or markers
Setup
  1. Area: No bounded area, drill takes place directly in front of the goal
  2. Goals: One full-size goal at one end
  3. Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned 5 yards in front of the goal line, facing the coach
  4. Coach: 1 grey coach/server positioned 10-12 yards out from the goal line, marked by cones set 5 yards off the goal line
  5. Equipment: Cones marking the coach/server's position 5 yards off the goal line and 10-12 yards out, soccer balls for serving
Instructions
  1. The coach/server delivers a high ball over the goalkeeper but under the crossbar.
  2. Goalkeeper leaps to intercept the ball at its highest point.
  3. Bring the ball back into the chest upon collection.
  4. Communicate clearly during the action.
  5. Reset and repeat from various positions.
Coaching Points
  • Use proper technique for high ball interception.
  • Aim to contact the ball at its highest point.
  • Prepare hands early and keep arms straight.
  • Ensure light footwork and timing for takeoff.
  • Command presence with clear communication.
  • Evaluate ball flight and pace promptly.
  • Use one-foot takeoff for optimal reach.
  • Secure the ball into the chest upon collection.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase ball speed and unpredictability.
2. Add a defender to challenge the goalkeeper.
Make it easier:
1. Use slower, more predictable ball deliveries.
2. Allow the goalkeeper to start closer to the dropping point.
3. Use a smaller goal to reduce the area covered.
