Lion's Den Dribble Race

Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones for marking playing area and dens
  • One ball per player
Setup
  1. Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones
  2. Group: 1 red outfield player starts on all fours in a line on the side of the area opposite the dens, with a ball positioned at their head
  3. Equipment: cones marking the perimeter of the 20x20 yard area, plus cones marking two 5x5 yard Lion's Den squares side by side on one end of the area
Instructions
  1. On the coach's call, players crawl and use their heads to push the ball into one of the Lion's Dens.
  2. Once the ball is in the den, players dribble back to the starting line using their feet.
  3. The first player to return to the start wins.
  4. Encourage players not to use their hands and to maintain control of the ball.
Coaching Points
  • Encourage consistent effort and enthusiasm.
  • Promote space awareness and ball control.
  • Ensure equal participation among all players.
  • Let the game naturally guide learning.
  • Emphasize having fun while fostering team spirit.
  • Focus on using different parts of the foot for dribbling.
  • Introduce the concept of spatial awareness in a playful context.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the size of the playing area to challenge spatial awareness.
2. Introduce obstacles in the playing area for additional difficulty.
3. Limit the use of the dominant foot when dribbling back.
Make it easier:
1. Reduce the playing area to minimize movement.
2. Allow players to walk instead of crawling.
3. Permit the use of hands to gently guide the ball, if needed.
