Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • - Cones
  • - Footballs
Setup
  1. Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones
  2. Team Blue: 8 blue outfield players start spaced evenly throughout the area as attackers maintaining possession
  3. Team Red: 6 red outfield players start divided into 3 pairs, each pair positioned together within the area to press attackers
  4. Equipment: Cones marking the corners and boundary of the 20x20 yard area, footballs for the attackers to maintain possession
Instructions
  1. Attackers try to maintain possession and move within the area.
  2. Defenders work in pairs to close down attackers and try to win possession.
  3. Ensure defenders communicate and stay compact, moving in tandem.
  4. Swap roles between attackers and defenders regularly.
Coaching Points
  • Close down the ball quickly with the nearest defender.
  • Maintain clear and constant communication.
  • Keep concentration levels high throughout.
  • Stay light on feet for agility.
  • Make play predictable by cutting off options.
  • Maintain compactness as a defensive unit.
  • Apply consistent pressure on the ball carrier.
  • Employ balanced and controlled 1v1 defending, with staggered feet for stability.
  • Recognize opportunities to force errors and disrupt attackers.
  • Utilize effective tackling from both front and back foot.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the number of attackers to 10.
2. Reduce the playing area to 15x15 yards to increase pressure.
Make it easier:
1. Decrease the number of attackers to 6 to allow more space.
2. Increase the size of the playing area to 25x25 yards.
