Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Soccer balls (one per player)
  • Cones to mark the playing area and home end lines
Setup
  1. Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones
  2. Team Red: 1 red outfield player (polar bear) starts dribbling a ball anywhere within the area
  3. Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player (penguin) starts dribbling a ball anywhere within the area
  4. Equipment: cones marking the corners of the 20x20 yard area, plus additional cones marking a separate home end line for each team
Instructions
  1. On the coach's command, players dribble to their home end line while maintaining close control.
  2. Polar bears aim to 'tag' penguins by getting close, promoting spatial awareness.
  3. Encourage players to dribble with heads up and use various foot surfaces.
  4. Polar bears 'eat' penguins if they lose close control or spatial awareness by nearing polar bears.
Coaching Points
  • Encourage players consistently to maintain motivation.
  • Promote space awareness by understanding their positioning relative to others.
  • Highlight the importance of close ball control.
  • Instill enjoyment to create an engaging learning environment.
  • Adapt sessions to be age and skill appropriate.
  • Ensure active involvement of every player.
  • Allow the drill to teach, minimizing direct instruction.
  • Foster the use of different foot parts for dribbling.
  • Teach controlled movement at varying speeds.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the playing area to increase dribbling challenge.
2. Allow polar bears to use gentle challenges to add pressure.
3. Increase dribbling to a further distance beyond the home line.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area, giving players more space.
2. Allow players more time to reach their home line.
3. Assign more 'lives' to penguins when tagged by polar bears.
