Equipment
- Cones for boundary markers to define a 30x20 area divided into thirds.
- Two goals positioned at each end.
- Multiple soccer balls for continuous play.
Setup
- Area: 30x20 yard area divided into thirds, with a larger middle third
- Goals: One goal centred on each end line
- Team Red: 4 red outfield players start spaced across their defensive third, with one designated as the deep-lying playmaker positioned centrally in that third
- Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the red team's goal
- Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players start spaced across their defensive third, with one designated as the deep-lying playmaker positioned centrally in that third
- Team Blue GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the blue team's goal
- Equipment: Cones marking the outer corners of the 30x20 area and the two internal lines dividing it into thirds, with a goal positioned centrally on each end line, plus multiple soccer balls available at the halfway line for continuous play
Instructions
- Start with the goalkeeper rolling out the ball.
- Teams attempt to score from the middle third using strategic play.
- Defensive players can carry the ball into the mid-third but retreat if possession is lost.
- Players rotate roles to experience being the deep-lying playmaker.
Coaching Points
- Effective communication across the team.
- Opt for supportive angles and correct distances.
- Decide early on actions with and without the ball.
- Maintain awareness by keeping your head up.
- Quality and timing in passing, including disguise if needed.
- Choose your passing technique wisely.
- Offer immediate support to teammates.
- Use body positioning to prepare for receiving passes.
- Evaluate forward pass opportunities but avoid forcing it.
- Ensure continuous ball movement.
- Create space to unpredictably disrupt opponents.
- Practice width, depth, and penetration for attacking.
- Stay aware of teammate and opposition positions.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Limit the number of touches allowed in each zone.
2. Allow players from the middle third to briefly enter forward zones to add pressure.
Make it easier:
1. Allow players to move freely between zones without restrictions.
2. Permit scoring from any third to reduce positional pressure.
