Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
- Soccer balls for all players except for designated crabs.
- Bibs to differentiate the crabs from other players.
- Cones to mark the 20x20 yard playing area.
Setup
- Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones
- Group: 4 players with soccer balls start spaced evenly across the area, dribbling
- Neutral: 1 black "crab" player (no ball) starts in the center of the area, ready to steal
- Equipment: cones marking the corners of the 20x20 yard playing area
Instructions
- Players dribble their balls inside the marked area, focusing on ball control and protection.
- 'Crabs' attempt to steal a ball by applying pressure and winning possession.
- When a 'crab' successfully steals a ball, they score a point and return the ball to the original player.
- Continue until a set time, then rotate 'crabs'.
- The crab or crabs with the most points at the end are the winners.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to stay aware of their surroundings at all times.
- Focus on maintaining close control by using all surfaces of the foot.
- Reinforce the importance of quick direction changes to evade 'crabs'.
- Emphasize the enjoyment and engagement of the session.
- Remind players to keep their heads up while dribbling.
- Allow the game to teach lessons naturally while facilitating activity.
- Ensure the activity remains age-appropriate and inclusive.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the number of 'crabs' to make stealing balls more challenging.
2. Reduce the size of the playing area to increase pressure on dribblers.
3. Add time limits for dribblers to navigate around specific cones.
Make it easier:
1. Decrease the number of 'crabs' to allow more success for dribblers.
2. Enlarge the playing area to give dribblers more space and time.
3. Allow dribblers a second chance before conceding a point when a ball is lost.
