Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones to mark the playing area
  • 3 mini goals
  • Footballs
Setup
  1. Area: 25x20 yard area marked with cones
  2. Goals: Two mini goals on one end line, one mini goal on the opposite end line
  3. Team Red: 2 red outfield players (defenders) start on the end line with the two mini goals, in possession of the ball
  4. Team Blue: 3 blue outfield players (attackers) start spaced evenly across the area, ready to receive the defenders' pass
  5. Equipment: Cones marking the four corners of the 25x20 yard area, 2 mini goals positioned side by side on one end line, 1 mini goal centred on the opposite end line
Instructions
  1. Defenders pass the ball to any attacker and immediately recover into a defensive position.
  2. Attackers attempt to score in the single mini goal.
  3. Defenders aim to stop attackers and win back the ball.
  4. If defenders intercept or win the ball, they can score in either mini goal on the opposite end.
  5. Award a point for defenders if the ball goes dead; five points for retrieving and scoring in the mini goals.
  6. Rotate defenders regularly to keep the drill dynamic.
Coaching Points
  • Stay compact and close down the ball quickly.
  • Communicate effectively and provide clear instructions.
  • Maintain concentration and correct body posture (low, side-on).
  • Make attack predictable by dictating play direction.
  • Nearest defender presses while others provide cover and support.
  • Be patient and choose the right moment to win the ball.
  • Understand and execute individual and team defensive responsibilities.
  • Keep a balanced shape when counter-attacking.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the number of attackers to four.
2. Decrease the size of the playing area.
3. Limit the defenders to intercept or tackle only in certain zones.
Make it easier:
1. Reduce the number of attackers to two.
2. Widen the playing area.
3. Allow defenders to start closer to the attackers at setup.
