Setup
- Area: 40x30 yard playing area with a 5-yard wide channel marked by cones down each flank
- Goals: One mini goal centred on each end line
- Team Red: 1 red outfield player starting inside the central area
- Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player starting inside the central area
- Neutral: 2 black neutral wingers, one positioned in each wide channel
- Equipment: Cones marking the corners and boundaries of the 40x30 area, additional cones marking the two 5-yard wide channels, one mini goal at each end of the area, balls for play
Instructions
- The team in possession uses neutral wingers to exploit wide channels and cross the ball.
- Wingers are restricted to two touches and cannot leave their channel.
- The opposing team cannot enter the wide channels.
- After a goal or the ball going out, the other team gains possession and attacks in the opposite direction.
Coaching Points
- Accurate delivery and execution of crosses
- Effective communication
- Timing of crosses to meet attacking runs
- Coordinated movement of attackers in the box
- Varied crossing techniques: near post, far post, lofted, driven
- Awareness of support runs from midfielders
- Quick decision-making and first touch
- Proper body shape for goal attempts
- Encouraging fluid combination play and quick passing
- Understanding of basic attacking principles and teamwork
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Limit wingers to one touch.
2. Reduce space in the central area.
3. Introduce a point system for certain types of goals (e.g., header goals worth more).
Make it easier:
1. Allow wingers unlimited touches.
2. Remove the restriction for opposing players entering the channels.
3. Use larger goals.
