Build-Up and Shoot from Deep — image 1
Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Disc cones/markers
  • Footballs (a good supply)
  • 2 full-size goals
  • Bibs (optional, to split lines into two groups)
Setup
  1. Area: Half pitch
  2. Goals: One full-size goal at each end of the half pitch
  3. Group: 12 outfield players split into two lines of 6, lined up at diagonally opposite corners of the half pitch, plus 2 additional outfield players positioned centrally in the middle of the pitch to act as centre feeders
  4. Group GK: 2 yellow goalkeepers, one positioned in each goal with a large supply of footballs
  5. Equipment: Disc cones marking the starting position of each line, cones marking the central target zone for the centre player, and cones marking the shooting line just outside the 18-yard box at each end
Instructions
  1. Both goalkeepers start the drill at the same time, each distributing to the first player in their line.
  2. The receiving player cushions/traps the pass and immediately runs forward with the ball while receiving.
  3. Each player (from the line) then passes to the feet of the centre player (the central feeder) in the middle.
  4. The centre player controls the pass, turns, dribbles towards goal, and shoots from outside the 18-yard line.
  5. After shooting, the shooter jogs to the end of their original line.
  6. The player who made the pass becomes the new centre player for the next repetition.
  7. Keep the drill continuous at a good pace, with constant movement and quick passing decisions.
Coaching Points
  • Get your first touch out of your feet so you can move forward quickly.
  • Pass accurately to the centre player’s feet—no hero balls.
  • When you receive in the middle, take a steady touch, then turn your body toward goal.
  • Keep the attack moving fast: control then go, don’t pause.
  • Shoot with a clear plan—try to hit the target as soon as you’re in range (outside the 18-yard line).
  • Encourage good communication between the line runner and the centre player.
  • Make sure the centre player comes up from the pass position to shoot, not from a standing start.
Variations
Make it harder:
• Add a defender who challenges the centre player on the turn (create a 1v1 before the shot).
• Add an overlapping runner from the wide/line side so the centre player gets support (aim for a 2v1 look).
• Extend to a full pitch to increase running and decision-making under fatigue.
Make it easier:
• Reduce the shooting zone: allow the shot from nearer to goal while players learn the pattern.
• Make the first pass from each goalkeeper shorter and slower so receivers can practise clean control.
• Remove the turn/dribble requirement first—let the centre player shoot first time after control (then build up to the full action).
