Equipment
- - 8 cones
- - 1 soccer ball
Setup
- Area: 15x15 yard square marked with cones
- Team Red: 2 red outfield players (defenders), each starting positioned near a different central gate
- Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players (attackers), spread out evenly within the 15x15 square
- Equipment: 8 cones total - 4 marking the corners of the 15x15 yard square and 4 arranged centrally to form a triangle creating three 3-yard wide gates, plus 1 soccer ball starting with one of the blue attackers
Instructions
- Four attackers aim to maintain possession and pass through any of the gates to score a point.
- Two defenders work together to close down and win the ball.
- If defenders win possession, they score a point and then restart play.
- Rotate players after five successful goals or a set time interval.
Coaching Points
- Quick ball pressure and immediate closing down by the nearest defender.
- Maintain clear communication amongst defenders to effectively cover, press, and balance.
- Stay light on the feet to react swiftly to the attackers' movements.
- Defending unit should remain compact to limit passing options.
- Work on identifying and disrupting passing lanes.
- Pressing players must force attackers into predictable spaces.
- Understand individual and team responsibilities in transitions.
- Focus on how to effectively win the ball and change momentum.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Decrease the size of the square to increase defensive pressure.
2. Add an extra defender (4v3) to heighten the challenge for attackers.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the square to give attackers more space.
2. Remove one gate, making scoring options more predictable.
