Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones for marking the playing area
  • Two small goals
  • Soccer balls
Setup
  1. Area: 50x40 yard pitch marked into thirds with cones, playing area is the central third.
  2. Goals: One small goal centred on each end line.
  3. Team Red: 4 red outfield players - 3 positioned inside the central third for the 4v4, and 1 winger stationed just outside one sideline of the central third.
  4. Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of Team Red's goal.
  5. Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players - 3 positioned inside the central third for the 4v4, and 1 winger stationed just outside the opposite sideline of the central third.
  6. Team Blue GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of Team Blue's goal.
  7. Equipment: Cones marking the outer pitch boundary and the lines dividing the pitch into thirds, two small goals centred on each end line, soccer balls at the halfway line for restarts.
Instructions
  1. The winger takes a touch into space, lifts their head to assess options, and delivers a cross into the final third.
  2. Players from the central area break into the final third to attack the cross.
  3. Defenders can follow attackers into the final third to attempt to defend the cross.
  4. Play continues with wingers repeatedly delivering crosses at game speed.
Coaching Points
  • Encourage effective communication among players.
  • Position players with good angles and distances for support.
  • Facilitate early and sound decision-making on and off the ball.
  • Emphasize quality of the first touch and ball control.
  • Encourage players to observe options by keeping their heads up.
  • Develop the quality, timing, and disguise of passes.
  • Reinforce quick support and movement into space.
  • Advocate patience and composure under pressure.
  • Maintain wide and long team positioning for space creation.
  • Ensure continuous ball movement to destabilize defense.
  • Promote forward runs to create and exploit offensive space.
  • Discern passing priorities and select the optimal pass.
  • Instill spatial awareness within players.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the playing area.
2. Limit touches for central players.
3. Allow only first-touch finishes from crosses.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area.
2. Allow wingers to dribble into the final third before crossing.
3. Remove defenders from the final third during crosses.
