Equipment
- Two poles
- Full-size goal
- Several soccer balls
Setup
- Area: Full pitch
- Goals: One full-size goal
- Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper starting at one pole, 5 yards from the other pole, in front of the goal
- Coach: 1 grey coach positioned between the poles facing the goalkeeper with several balls for serving
- Equipment: Two poles positioned 5 yards apart in front of the goal, one full-size goal, several soccer balls with the coach
Instructions
- Goalkeeper starts at one pole and shuffles to the other.
- Goalkeeper touches the base of the pole and gets into a low set position.
- As the goalkeeper sets, the coach serves the ball to prompt a low or mid-dive save.
- Goalkeeper pushes off the foot nearest to the ball, executing a dive to catch the ball.
- Repeat with the coach increasing serve difficulty as proficiency improves.
Coaching Points
- Maintain a balanced set position with body weight forward.
- Focus on technique and body alignment.
- Stand large in 1v1 situations, assessing angles quickly.
- Move swiftly and keep light on feet.
- Anticipate shots and react without hesitation.
- Communicate effectively with teammates.
- Monitor and adapt to the flight and pace of the ball.
- Confidently narrow angles and execute diving saves.
- Encourage a positive attitude and expect a shot at any time.
- Develop coordination through consistent practice.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the speed and unpredictability of ball serves.
2. Reduce the space between poles for faster footwork.
3. Integrate high diving saves to vary the challenge.
Make it easier:
1. Slow down ball serves to allow more reaction time.
2. Increase space between poles for easier movement.
3. Reduce dive height and place serves closer to the goalkeeper.
