Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • - Goal
  • - Goalkeeper
  • - Cones for marking 20x20 yard area
  • - Soccer balls
Setup
  1. Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones
  2. Goals: One goal at one end of the area
  3. Team Red: 1 red outfield player (defender) starts lined up further from the goal than the attacker
  4. Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player (attacker) starts lined up closer to the goal than the defender
  5. Team Blue GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the goal
  6. Coach: 1 grey coach positioned near the halfway point of the area holding the balls to serve through the attacker's legs
  7. Equipment: Cones marking the corners of the 20x20 yard area, soccer balls with the coach
Instructions
  1. The coach plays a ball through the attacker's legs towards the goal.
  2. The attacker runs towards the goal to attempt to score.
  3. The defender sprints to recover and aims to get goalside of the attacker.
  4. Defenders should focus on making play predictable and winning the ball.
  5. After each attempt, players return to their lines and roles are switched after all attackers have gone.
Coaching Points
  • Communicate effectively and stay focused.
  • Stay light on your feet and ready to respond.
  • Aim to make play predictable for the attacker.
  • Recover quickly to get goalside.
  • Use intelligent 1v1 defending techniques.
  • Maintain balance and control in defense.
  • Close down space effectively while pressing.
  • Position correctly as an individual and part of a team.
  • Provide covering support and maintain defensive balance.
  • Know when to tackle and disrupt play.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Decrease the distance between the attacker and the goal.
2. Serve the ball faster to give attackers an advantage.
3. Add a time limit for defenders to recover and win the ball.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area to allow more time for defenders to recover.
2. Start defenders closer to the attacker to reduce recovery distance.
3. Allow defenders to start moving as soon as the ball is served.
