Setup
- Area: 20 yard channel between a single serving cone and two cones placed 5 yards apart
- Team Red GK: 3 yellow goalkeepers positioned in a queue behind the two cones (5 yards apart), facing the single cone 20 yards away, taking turns to intercept and save
- Team Blue GK: 2 yellow goalkeepers positioned in a queue behind the single cone, 20 yards from the double-cone line, taking turns to serve the ball into the middle
- Equipment: 3 cones total — two set 5 yards apart at one end, one set 20 yards away at the opposite end; balls at the single-cone end for serving
Instructions
- A goalkeeper from the single cone serves the ball to the middle area.
- Opposing goalkeeper moves to intercept and make the save.
- Players switch lines after each service.
- Adjust service types throughout, including rolled balls, diving saves, and high balls.
- After saving, goalkeeper throws the ball back to the server's chest.
Coaching Points
- Maintain a forward-balanced set position.
- Use correct technique; be confident and positive.
- Cover angles efficiently in 1v1 situations.
- React swiftly; stay light and organized.
- Assess ball flight and pace accurately.
- Make quick decisions on approach angle.
- Execute diving saves effectively.
- Develop good starting position and technical habits.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Decrease the distance between cones to increase reaction time.
2. Make service types less predictable with mixed speeds and heights.
Make it easier:
1. Increase cone distance to allow more reaction time.
2. Simplify service types by using slow, predictable rolls.
3. Allow a pause between each serve to discuss technique.
