Equipment
- Goal
- Multiple footballs
Setup
- Area: Penalty area (18-yard box) markings used as the drill zone
- Goals: One large goal at the end of the penalty area
- Group GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper (working goalkeeper) positioned on the goal line in front of the goal
- Neutral: 1 black neutral goalkeeper (target goalkeeper) positioned at the edge of the 18-yard box, facing the goal
- Coach: 1 grey coach positioned at the penalty spot with a supply of footballs
- Equipment: Multiple footballs held by the coach at the penalty spot
Instructions
- The coach lobs the ball at head height towards the working goalkeeper.
- The working goalkeeper assesses flight and pace before moving to intercept.
- The goalkeeper punches the ball back towards the target goalkeeper.
- Use either a one or two-handed punch.
- Rotate goalkeepers regularly.
Coaching Points
- Ensure proper punching technique with straight arm preparation
- Move swiftly into the line of the ball
- Maintain clear, loud communication
- Make early and confident decisions
- Use effective lateral and forward/backward footwork
- Be aware of goalpost location
- Assess ball flight and adjust positioning accordingly
- Maintain light footwork in preparation
- Focus on timing and clean execution of the punch
- Aim for high intensity and quality in technique
- Allow adequate rest between repetitions
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the speed and height of the lobbed ball.
2. Introduce defenders to obstruct the goalkeeper's vision.
Make it easier:
1. Use a softer ball trajectory.
2. Allow more time for the goalkeeper to set up.
3. Reduce the distance from the coach to the goalkeeper for shorter lobs.
