Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Balls
  • Cones for marking the 20x20 area
Setup
  1. Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones
  2. Group: 2 players total, 1 positioned outside the area holding a ball and 1 positioned inside the area without a ball, ready to receive headed serves
  3. Equipment: 4 cones marking the corners of the 20x20 yard area, balls held by the outside player(s)
Instructions
  1. Outside players serve the ball by hand to an inside player for a standard header.
  2. The inside player requests a second aerial throw, requiring a leap to head the ball.
  3. Inside players then move quickly to another outside player to repeat the actions.
  4. Players must remain aware of the space and other players around them.
  5. Perform the drill at a high intensity, ensuring regular rotation between inside and outside roles.
Coaching Points
  • Arch the back and use the neck to punch through the ball.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain eyes on the ball.
  • Ensure good body shape to attack the ball and contact with the top of it to direct it downward.
  • Stay light on the feet, using the forehead to strike with eyes open and mouth closed.
  • Practice one-footed and two-footed jumps, using arms for balance.
  • Encourage confidence and ensure contact is made with the forehead, keeping the chest aimed at the target.
  • Emphasize the speed of the head striking the ball to generate force.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Decrease rest time between headers.
2. Increase the distance of served balls.
3. Set a target area for heading accuracy.
Make it easier:
1. Reduce the playing area size.
2. Allow inside players to catch the ball before heading.
3. Use a softer ball to build confidence.
