Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones to mark the playing area
  • Soccer balls
Setup
  1. Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones
  2. Team Red: 3 red outfield players (defending team) start with 2 spaced across the line they are defending and 1 acting as the recovering defender positioned behind the attacking trio, close to the opposite end line
  3. Team Blue: 3 blue outfield players (attacking team) start grouped near the centre of the area, ready to receive the initial pass from the defending team
  4. Equipment: cones marking the four corners and sidelines of the 20x20 yard area
Instructions
  1. Attackers try to stop the ball on the opposite line to score.
  2. The defending team's objective is to regain possession and counter-attack towards the opposite line.
  3. Rotate roles between attackers and defenders every two minutes or when possession changes.
  4. Apply the offside rule throughout the drill.
Coaching Points
  • Close down the ball carrier quickly.
  • Maintain effective communication among defenders.
  • Focus and concentrate on ball and player movements.
  • Adopt a low, side-on body shape to defend effectively.
  • Force attackers to play predictably by directing their movement.
  • Exhibit patience and choose the right moment to tackle.
  • Recover quickly and support teammates in defense.
  • Use body shape to control and guide the attacker.
  • Deliver clear instructions to fellow defenders.
  • Maintain correct angles and distances when supporting teammates.
  • Stay compact and organized defensively.
  • Be ready to pause play to highlight teaching moments.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the playing area to increase pressure.
2. Limit the time attackers have to score.
3. Add a neutral player in support of attackers.
Make it easier:
1. Increase playing area to give more space.
2. Allow recovering defender to start closer to the action.
3. Remove offside rule to simplify play.
