Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones for marking the 50x40 playing field and zones
  • Small goals at each end
  • Soccer balls
Setup
  1. Area: 50x40 yard area marked with cones, divided into three zones with a wider middle zone
  2. Goals: One small goal centred on each end line
  3. Team Red: 5 red outfield players, 4 spaced evenly across the middle zone for the 5v5 match and 1 positioned as the sole defender in their team's end zone
  4. Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the goal in the red team's end zone
  5. Team Blue: 5 blue outfield players, 4 spaced evenly across the middle zone for the 5v5 match and 1 positioned as the sole defender in their team's end zone
  6. Team Blue GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the goal in the blue team's end zone
  7. Equipment: Cones marking the outer 50x40 yard boundary and the lines dividing the pitch into two end zones and one wider middle zone, plus one small goal set on each end line
Instructions
  1. Teams aim to play through balls into the end zones.
  2. Attacking players can enter the end zone to challenge the defender after a through ball.
  3. Only one defender is allowed in the end zone to stop the attacker.
  4. Apply the offside rule; attackers must be in the middle zone when the ball is played.
  5. Goalkeepers decide whether to intercept the through ball or stay to anticipate a shot.
Coaching Points
  • Mastery of technique in 1v1 duels
  • Maintain large posture, aligning with goal center and ball
  • Anticipate shots actively
  • Secure ball with tucked elbows to avoid injury
  • Exhibit confidence in 1v1s
  • Cover goal angles effectively
  • Quick reflexes
  • Assess opponent's approach angle and distance
  • Communicate clearly when collecting the ball
  • Avoid risky plays; prioritize correct techniques
  • Steady head positioning when challenging for the ball
  • Goalkeepers should assertively claim the ball
  • Understand starting positions for effective closing down
  • Quick decision-making in dynamic situations
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the width of the middle zone to increase pressure.
2. Allow an additional defender in the end zone only if they make a defensive run from starting point.
3. Require attackers to play one-touch passes before through balls.
Make it easier:
1. Widen the playing area to provide more space.
2. Allow one additional defender to assist in the end zone.
3. Remove the offside rule to simplify attacking movements.
