Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Soccer balls
  • Cones for marking 10x10 meter areas
Setup
  1. Area: 10x10 yard area marked with cones
  2. Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player starts on one side of the area
  3. Team Red: 1 red outfield player starts on the opposite side of the area
  4. Equipment: Cones marking the corners of each 10x10 yard area, 1 ball per pair
Instructions
  1. One player passes the ball to their opponent across the area.
  2. After receiving, the player must protect the ball using their body to keep it away from the defender.
  3. The defender moves in to apply pressure and attempts to win the ball or force it out of bounds.
  4. If the ball exits the area, roles are reversed.
  5. Rotate opponents every minute to ensure varied challenge.
Coaching Points
  • Maintain close ball control
  • Use a strong first touch
  • Keep your head up to scan the area
  • Consistently move the ball into open spaces away from the defender
  • Bend knees for better balance
  • Adopt a positive and confident attitude
  • Decide when to dribble and when to shield
  • Keep body between ball and defender
  • Use turns to protect the ball
  • Group players by ability to ensure balanced challenges
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the area to increase pressure.
2. Increase defender aggression to simulate game intensity.
Make it easier:
1. Increase area size to allow more space for ball protection.
2. Allow passive defending initially, progressing to active defending.
