Equipment
- Soccer balls
- Cones for marking the 40x30 yard area
Setup
- Area: 40x30 yard area marked with cones
- Group: 2 players (one pair), each with a ball, start together on one end of the area
- Equipment: Cones marking the corners of the 40x30 yard area, 2 soccer balls (one per player)
Instructions
- The first player dribbles the ball forward, attempting to cover ground quickly.
- The second player follows closely with their ball, maintaining control.
- On the coach's command to stop, both players freeze, and the coach assesses their proximity.
- Swap roles after a set interval.
- Encourage players to use various techniques to maintain pace without losing control.
Coaching Points
- Use laces for dribbling to maintain speed.
- Minimize touches for smooth, uninterrupted strides.
- Maintain good control with the first touch out of feet.
- Keep head up to scan the field and make tactical decisions.
- Quickly exploit available space while dribbling.
- Develop spatial awareness and timing to capitalize on created spaces.
- Foster a positive mindset to move forward effectively.
- Choose appropriate techniques for different situations.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the allowed area for more challenging control.
2. Integrate defensive players who attempt to intercept balls.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the area for more space.
2. Allow players to walk to focus on control before increasing speed.
