- Footballs
- Full-size goal
- Cones (optional for marking group positions)
Setup
- Area: Penalty area (18-yard box)
- Goals: One full-size goal at one end of the penalty area
- Group: 12 outfield players split into four groups of 3, spaced evenly in and around the penalty area, each group ready to attack the same goal
- Group GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the full-size goal
- Coach: 1 grey coach positioned at the edge of the penalty area with a supply of footballs, ready to serve balls into the area
- Equipment: Scrimmage vests to distinguish the four groups, cones optional for marking each group's starting position
Instructions
- The game starts when the coach serves a football into the penalty area.
- All teams play at the same time against the other groups that are in the area for that round.
- Any team that scores sits out immediately for the rest of that round and moves to the next match-up.
- In each round, the last team to score is eliminated (out of the “World Cup” tournament).
- Run the rounds as follows:
- 5.1. World Cup Round 1: 3v9, 3v6, then 3v3 (eliminate the last team to score).
- 5.2. World Cup Round 2: 3v6 then 3v3 (eliminate the last team to score).
- 5.3. World Cup Final: 3v3.
- The first team to score two goals in the final wins the World Cup.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick teamwork: pass early and move to receive again.
- Play quick passes to get into shooting positions.
- Shoot as soon as a clear chance appears.
- Stay positive and make the most of the numbers-down situation.
- First touch should set up the shot or create a chance to pass.
- Keep attacking together rather than one player forcing long efforts.
Variations
Make it harder:
• Limit attackers to a maximum number of passes (e.g. 3) before shooting.
• Add a requirement that every goal must come from a pass after the serve (no direct one-touch shots).
• Introduce a defender (or extra attacker) coming on/off each round to change the numbers mid-play.
Make it easier:
• Start with fewer total players on the pitch (e.g. Round 1 begins at 3v6, then 3v3).
• Allow rebounds/second chances to count, so missed shots can still lead to goals.
• Reduce the final target to first team to score 1 goal.
