Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Balls for each player (except one)
  • Cones to define the 35x35 yard area
Setup
  1. Area: 35x35 yard area marked with cones
  2. Group: 1 outfield player with a ball starts spaced inside the area, dribbling freely
  3. Neutral: 1 black defender (no ball) starts inside the area
  4. Equipment: 1 ball per outfield player, cones marking the corners of the 35x35 yard area
Instructions
  1. Players with balls dribble within the area, maintaining control.
  2. The Defender attempts to win the ball from dribblers.
  3. If tagged, the dribbler stands still with legs apart until freed.
  4. A teammate can free a tagged player by passing the ball between their legs and crawling through.
  5. Switch the Defender role regularly while monitoring workload and intensity.
Coaching Points
  • Encourage quick ball movement and quality touches.
  • Focus on staying specific to football skills.
  • Ensure endurance training is challenging enough to overload aerobic capacity.
  • Monitor that body adaptation doesn't lead to comfort zones.
  • Adjust intensity or duration to avoid plateauing.
  • Provide proper recovery to prevent burnout.
  • Stay flexible with planning to allow recovery when necessary.
  • Balance overload with age and fitness level considerations.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the size of the playing area.
2. Add a second Defender.
3. Restrict dribblers to one-touch dribbling.
Make it easier:
1. Decrease the playing area size.
2. Allow two passes between players to free a tagged player.
3. Allow dribblers to use both feet freely.
