Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Soccer balls
  • Cones
Setup
  1. Area: 30x30 yard area marked with cones and divided into four equal quarters.
  2. Group: 16 players split into four groups of 4 (one group per quarter — top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right), each group starting inside its own quarter passing and moving with their ball.
  3. Equipment: cones marking the outer 30x30 boundary and the two dividing lines that split it into four equal quarters, plus one soccer ball per group of 4.
Instructions
  1. On coach's command, one player from each group moves clockwise to the next quarter to defend.
  2. The remaining three players in each quarter maintain possession against the defender.
  3. Award points for maintaining possession or note the first group to lose the ball.
  4. Return players to their original areas and select a new defender on the next command.
Coaching Points
  • Encourage quick passes and movement to maintain possession.
  • Teach defenders to anticipate and intercept passes.
  • Focus on decision-making under pressure.
  • Train players to maintain intensity while fatigued.
  • Allow sufficient recovery periods to prevent burnout.
  • Adapt the drill to suit players' fitness levels.
  • Foster teamwork and communication among players.
  • Emphasize technical, tactical, physical, and psychological aspects.
  • Evaluate possession retention strategies in a 3v1 scenario.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the playing area to increase pressure.
2. Add a time limit to maintain possession.
3. Introduce a second defender to increase difficulty.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area to reduce pressure.
2. Allow defenders to attempt a tackle only after 10 seconds.
3. Permit use of an additional player in attack to increase numbers.
