Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
- Soccer balls (1 per outside player)
- Use center circle of a pitch or create a comparable circular area with cones
Setup
- Area: Circular area approximately 20 yards in diameter, using the pitch's center circle or a similarly sized circular space
- Group: 3 red outfield players spaced evenly around the edge of the circle, each starting with one ball
- Neutral: 2 black defenders starting inside the circle
- Equipment: 3 soccer balls (one per outside player), cones marking the circular boundary if a center circle is unavailable
Instructions
- Players on the outside pass one ball between each other, keeping it away from the two defenders.
- Defenders aim to intercept the ball from the circle of passers.
- Use two balls simultaneously for added difficulty and speed.
- Switch defenders every few minutes, ensuring all players get a chance to defend and pass.
Coaching Points
- Emphasize quick decision-making and precise passing.
- Encourage constant player movement to open up passing lanes.
- Highlight body language and readiness to receive a pass.
- Focus on communication between players to maintain ball possession.
- Ensure players are warming up muscles progressively during the drill.
- Foster good habits by encouraging proper technique in passing and receiving.
- Stress the importance of hydration during the exercise session.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the circle to limit space.
2. Increase the number of defenders inside the circle.
3. Limit the number of touches for outside players to speed up play.
Make it easier:
1. Remove one defender, making it 1 vs. all.
2. Allow outside players more touch time with the ball.
3. Increase the circle size for more space between players.
