Equipment
- Cones or mannequins for position marking
- Goal for shooting practice
- Multiple footballs
- Half pitch for playing area
Setup
- Area: Half pitch
- Goals: One goal at the attacking end of the half
- Group: 6 players positioned per the passing sequence — X1 on the right side near the halfway line, X2 central just ahead of X1, X3 on the left side level with X2, X6 centrally positioned 15 yards ahead of X3, X5 wide on the right edge of the area level with X6, and X4 centrally positioned 10 yards from goal ready to exploit the vacant space
- Equipment: 6 cones or mannequins marking the starting positions of X1 to X6, with a supply of spare footballs placed beside X1's starting cone for continuity
Instructions
- X1 initiates the drill with a pass to X2.
- X2 opens up to pass to X3.
- X6 moves short to receive a long pass from X3.
- X6 distributes the ball wide to X5.
- X4 exploits the vacant space; X5 plays them through for a shot on goal.
- Reset positions and rotate players through the sequence.
Coaching Points
- Encourage clear and effective communication.
- Focus on quality first touches.
- Keep heads up to make swift decisions.
- Maintain ball movement into open spaces.
- Ensure dynamic movements off the ball.
- Prioritize accuracy, timing, and disguise in passes.
- Assess passing angles and distances effectively.
- Facilitate combination play using minimal touches.
- Perimeter players should react quickly to changes in possession.
- Promote fast, confident passes and effective switch of play.
- Emphasize pass and move principles continuously.
- Maintain awareness of receiving positions.
- Encourage crisp, flat passes and quick movements.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the space to simulate tighter game conditions.
2. Increase the speed of the drill, reducing time on the ball.
3. Add a defender to pressure the attacking sequence.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the playing area to provide more space.
2. Allow additional touches to control the ball.
3. Remove the forward pass requirement, allowing a simpler buildup.
