Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • - 2 Goals
  • - Multiple Balls (one per attacker)
  • - Cones for marking area
Setup
  1. Area: 35x30 yard area marked with cones
  2. Goals: One goal centred on each end line
  3. Team Red: 1 red outfield player (defender) starts on their own goal line
  4. Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player (attacker) starts on their own goal line with a ball
  5. Equipment: Cones marking the four corners of the 35x30 yard area, 2 goals (one on each end line), multiple balls available at the blue team's starting point
Instructions
  1. An attacker dribbles towards the opposite goal attempting to score.
  2. A defender steps out to prevent the attacker from scoring by winning the ball or blocking attempts.
  3. Award one point to attackers for scoring and one point to defenders for successful defending.
  4. Once the ball is out of play, reset quickly for the next pair to start.
  5. Rotate teams after a set number of rounds to maintain intensity.
Coaching Points
  • Close down the ball quickly and decisively.
  • Communicate and stay vocal while defending.
  • Maintain focus throughout the duel.
  • Stay light on the feet for agility.
  • Aim to make the attack predictable.
  • Attempt to win the ball when appropriate.
  • Stand side-on, with a low and balanced body posture.
  • Practice patience in defending.
  • Employ intelligent 1v1 defending skills.
  • Approach the ball at the correct speed and angle.
  • Utilize jockeying and tackling effectively.
  • Balance is key with staggered, bent knees.
  • Be ready to pause and correct technique or decision-making when needed.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Decrease the size of the playing area to add pressure.
2. Allow attackers to restart immediately after losing possession, creating more unpredictability.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area to give attackers more space.
2. Allow defenders to begin a yard closer to the attacker for easier engagement.
3. Permit attackers to use their dominant foot only.
