- Balls ('popcorn')
- Cones for marking the area
Setup
- Area: 20x20 yard area marked with cones, adjustable in size to suit player count
- Group: 1 red outfield player starts in one corner of the area with a ball at their feet
- Equipment: Cones marking the corners of the 20x20 yard area, balls scattered randomly throughout the area in a 'popcorn' pattern
Instructions
- On the whistle, players run into the area.
- Players touch as many free balls as possible using the sole of their foot.
- Players count their touches aloud.
- Ensure players move continuously and avoid colliding.
- Stop the activity and reset players to the start.
Coaching Points
- Encourage continual movement and alertness.
- Foster enjoyment and active participation.
- Emphasize using different foot parts.
- Ensure the challenge matches the players' age and skill level.
- Focus on player engagement, not perfection.
- Highlight spatial awareness and decision-making.
- Motivate consistently throughout the drill.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Impose penalties for re-touching the same ball.
2. Increase the playing area size.
3. Require players to work in pairs and combine touch counts.
Make it easier:
1. Reduce the playing area size for easier access.
2. Allow walking when counting touches.
3. Introduce team tasks to foster collaboration.
