Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones
  • Flags or small training flags
  • One football per player
  • Bibs for identification (optional)
Setup
  1. Area: 10x25 yard grid marked with cones
  2. Group: 6 players, one ball each, spaced evenly throughout the grid
  3. Equipment: cones marking the corners of the 10x25 yard grid, 4 flags randomly placed within the grid
Instructions
  1. On your signal, players dribble around the grid, avoiding flags and others.
  2. Players should frequently look up to navigate congestion.
  3. When you shout “STOP”, everyone sprints to a free flag.
  4. Repeat until a player reaches the same flag five times consecutively.
Coaching Points
  • Encourage head-up dribbling to scan for open spaces.
  • Maintain close control in tight spaces.
  • Use varied foot surfaces to change ball direction effectively.
  • Highlight quick direction changes to evade congestion.
  • Focus on controlled acceleration after gaining control.
  • Ensure immediate reaction and sprint on the “STOP” call.
  • Recognize and praise spatial awareness and ball control under pressure.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Decrease grid size to 8m x 20m to increase congestion.
2. Increase the frequency of “STOP” calls for shorter bursts.
3. Limit touch style to inside or outside foot only.
Make it easier:
1. Add more flags to reduce competition for space.
2. Expand grid size to 12m x 30m to lower congestion.
3. Remove or reduce the scoring target for a simpler focus on reactions.
