Equipment
- Cones (for the playing area, zones, and center line)
- Balls
Setup
- Area: 20x30 yard area marked with cones, divided by a center line with a 2-yard end zone marked at each end.
- Team Red: 4 red outfield players start spread across their own half of the main area, on their side of the center line.
- Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players start spread across their own half of the main area, on their side of the center line.
- Neutral: 4 black neutral players — 2 positioned in the main area to assist the team in possession, and 1 target player standing in each end zone.
- Equipment: Cones marking the four corners of the 20x30 area, cones marking the 2-yard zone lines at each end, and cones marking the center line.
Instructions
- The target player passes to the attacking team which attempts to reach the opposite end zone.
- Neutral players assist the team in possession and cannot defend or score.
- Teams switch roles after a score; the target player passes to the opposite team.
- The defending team must intercept the ball or close down attackers, using the neutral players as needed.
Coaching Points
- Quickly close down opponents
- Maintain constant communication
- Stay focused throughout play
- Make the opponent's play predictable
- Nearest player to the ball must act fast
- Keep team structure compact
- Look for opportunities to intercept passes
- Utilize intelligent 1v1 defense
- Coordinate as a defensive unit
- Provide support and cover for teammates
- Apply appropriate pressure
- Understand team and individual responsibilities
- Force direction to simplify defensive tasks
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Shrink the playing area to increase defensive pressure.
2. Allow neutral players to become defenders for the opposing team.
Make it easier:
1. Expand the playing area to create more space.
2. Allow target players to assist in play outside their zones.
3. Reduce the number of defending players.
