Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Blue, green, and red cones
  • Small goals or gates
  • Soccer balls
Setup
  1. Area: 60x40 yard area with a 5-yard wide zone along each side
  2. Goals: One small goal/gate at each end of the area marked with red cones
  3. Team Red: 1 red outfield player starts at the blue gate in their wide zone
  4. Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player starts at the green gate in their wide zone
  5. Equipment: Blue and green cones forming a 6-yard wide gate in each wide zone, red cones marking the small goals/gates at each end, soccer balls
Instructions
  1. The red team attempts to dribble through the blue gate.
  2. After passing through the gate, they cross the ball into the central area.
  3. A teammate runs onto the cross to attempt a goal.
  4. The blue team mirrors this using the green gate.
  5. Upon a goal or turnover, switch possession and repeat.
Coaching Points
  • Ensure clear communication between players.
  • Maintain good angles and distances for support.
  • Make early decisions on and off the ball.
  • Keep head up to read the game.
  • Encourage movement to unsettle the defense.
  • Adopt a positive attitude towards scoring.
  • Focus on passing quality (accuracy, timing, disguise).
  • React quickly to support after the pass.
  • Use appropriate body shape for control and passing.
  • Look for opportunities to pass forward.
  • Avoid forcing passes; be patient in build-up.
  • Play fast, confident passes to break lines.
  • Create space and move effectively to receive the ball.
  • Develop good decision-making under pressure.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the zone width to increase difficulty in crossing.
2. Add a defender in each wide zone to pressure the dribbler.
3. Increase the playing area's length for longer supporting runs.
Make it easier:
1. Widen the gates to make entry easier.
2. Allow teams to start closer to their gates.
3. Remove the requirement to dribble through the gate before crossing.
