Equipment
- Markers for the playing area and halfway line
- Two goals
- Soccer balls
Setup
- Area: 50x35 yard area marked with cones and divided by a halfway line
- Goals: One goal on each end line of the area
- Team Red: 6 red outfield players start, 4 positioned in the starting half facing the attackers and 2 positioned in the opposite half near the halfway line
- Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line at the opposite end from the attackers' starting half
- Team Blue: 6 blue outfield players start spaced evenly across the starting half in possession of the ball
- Team Blue GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the starting half
- Equipment: Cones marking the four corners of the 50x35 area and the halfway line, soccer balls for the attacking team
Instructions
- Start with the attacking team maintaining possession against four defenders.
- If defenders win the ball, they aim to score quickly.
- Once attackers complete six passes, they attack the opposite goal.
- Attackers should run at pace against the two defenders.
- Ensure the four defenders recover to support, creating a 6v6 situation.
- Repeat the exercise from the other half with role reversal.
Coaching Points
- Communicate effectively as a defensive unit.
- Maintain concentration to anticipate movements.
- Use a low, side-on body shape for agility.
- Press the ball quickly while remaining patient.
- Keep a compact shape to limit space.
- Predict and intercept passes by reading the game.
- Double-team the ball carrier when possible.
- Distance yourself appropriately when pressing.
- Ensure cover, support, and pressure with compactness.
- Demonstrate individual defending techniques: jockeying, tackling.
- Recognize and close gaps promptly.
- Illustrate roles: pressure, cover, and balance.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Decrease the size of the playing area to increase pressure.
2. Increase the number of passes before attackers can proceed.
3. Add an additional attacker to create a 7v4 scenario initially.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area to reduce pressure.
2. Decrease the number of passes required before attackers can attack.
3. Remove one attacker to create a 5v4 initial scenario.
