Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Balls
  • Cones for boundary marking
  • Bibs for team identification
Setup
  1. Area: 35x25 yard area marked with cones
  2. Team Red: 4 red outfield players (defenders) start compact and central within the area, ready to react to ball movement
  3. Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players (attackers) start spaced evenly around the perimeter of the area, one holding the ball
  4. Equipment: cones marking the four corners and boundary lines of the 35x25 yard area, bibs distinguishing the two teams, 1 ball given to Team Blue
Instructions
  1. Attackers pass the ball by hand among themselves, staying within the marked area.
  2. Defenders react to the ball movement, maintaining a compact shape.
  3. Emphasize defenders moving as a unit, closing down space as needed.
  4. Freeze play occasionally to highlight good positioning or correct errors.
  5. Switch roles every set period, ensuring all players experience both attacking and defending roles.
Coaching Points
  • Encourage constant communication among defenders.
  • Maintain concentration to anticipate passes.
  • Adopt a low, side-on body position to react quickly.
  • The nearest defender should press the ball quickly.
  • Use patience to avoid rash challenges.
  • Direct attackers into predictable areas.
  • Ensure good coverage and support to maintain compactness.
  • Highlight the importance of teamwork in maintaining defensive shape.
  • Relate actions to roles within a back four, focusing on zone defense.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the playing area to increase pressure on defenders.
2. Limit the time attackers can hold the ball before passing.
Make it easier:
1. Enlarge the playing area to give defenders more time to react.
2. Allow defenders to use hands to tap the ball away, mirroring touch football rules.
